It occurred to me while reading Gerald's snap that my first term at
university, the guy in the room next to me had a breakdown. We didn't notice
anything much at first, but it was a shared room, and his roommate began to
be woken late at night by his hammering on the wall with his fists.
Apparently he would progress round the room, hammering different sections of
wall in turn. When accompanied by moaning this would disturb neighbouring
rooms as well as the sleeping roommate. Of course, the alarm was raised soon
enough, and he returned to his family to be given the necessary professional
care & support.
It is more likely that the Virginia Tech gunman went on a rampage because he
was an English major than because he was mentally ill. Statistically,
mentally ill people are far less likely to commit violent crimes than the
population at large. And we worry about the normies.
