Dear Justin, Anshu, David, John, and the List,
I forwarded these messages to Garry de la Pomerai from the Coalition for
Global School Safety www.interragate.info/cogss who is not on this email
list. His response is appended below. Feel free to contact him directly,
possibly keeping us informed by cc:ing this list or at least by sending a
periodic update to this list regarding progress.
I would also suggest keeping Lori Peek http://lamar.colostate.edu/~loripeek
and Marla Petal [log in to unmask] informed because they are leading some of
the work in this area. Finally, the authors of the book "Promoting
Community Resilience in Disasters: The Role for Schools, Youth, and
Families" http://www.alibris.com/search/books/isbn/0387238204 have done
excellent work in New Zealand and would be interested in others' work.
Thank you for your work in this area and best wishes for its continuation.
Ilan

Dear Ilan, Justin and Anshu et all,
Anshu, you have raised a valid point and somthing that was certainly raised
at the Ahmedabad 1st International Conference on School Safety in January.
Maybe it was by yourself, as the conference was an organised event by SEEDS
India, with the Government plus with COGSS input.
Yes i am aware that the area of Children with Disabilities is only now being
addressed, but first there is a data/ material collection project already in
progress, sponsored by the ISDR/ UNESCO which Marla Petal is undertaking,
whom i am sure will respond seperately and assist you in coordination of
data, and along with us all in COGSS assist you in developing and promoting
this special and needed sector.
I will certainly include this within our workshop at the IDRC Harbin, China
in late August. Let us all liaise meanwhile.
so i lead onto...
Justin, all works in this field can only stregthen awareness in the field,
so i personally encourage all research and data mining and collation to any
website.
Might i suggest that you also liaise with Marla Petal, as there is a
tremendous amount of data, materials and initiatives already successfully
being used in the field. I'd hate for you to either duplicate or indeed miss
an opportunity. Much of the material is in the physical format of games and
models, which is sometimes difficult to translate on a data sheet. Languages
and cultural differentials of approach are also a challenge.
Within the COGSS forum there are scores of initiatives on various aspects of
DR Education, training / drill and contingency planning within schools.
COGSS will be presenting and developing two key arreas of this work at the
IDRC Harbin, China in August. I'll let Marla reply and explain her workshop
proposal and about her data collection project work.
The Other workshop is about the drafting of a very 1st stage document /
leaflet for distribution to all vulnerable Schools, outling the basic simple
proactive physical actions that the Community/ School can take in making a
building safer externally and internally; and to introduce basic contingency
plans and simple drill procedures for varying hazard types.
This is, I stress, to maximise coverage of schools prior to them being
formally approached by Agencies and Governments within any ongoing Project
work.
So, possibly i also see your research as important and complimetary to this
smaller project, which lies within the bigger Picture of both COGSS works
and that of the UN-ISDR / UNESCO and the many other excellent International
Agency initiatives.
I look forward to your response and encourage you to develop your idea in
coordination with existing works.
regards
Garry de la Pomerai
