Dear colleagues,
I would like to endorse all that Ian has said and thank Ian for sending
this message round. All of us involved in film in Sheffield are
saddened deeply by this sudden loss.
Barry's influence as an inspirer in film making in Sheffield goes way
back to the late 60's and 70's. In fact I can say personally that
Sheffield Film Coop would not have made any films if it had not been for
Barry. He made us believe it was possible and supported us all the way.
He was also instrumental in establishing Sheffield Independent Film in
the 70's which came about because many of his graduate students wanted
to remain in Sheffield to build up a facilities and film making
environment. We now have a thriving cultural industries quarter in
Sheffield.
I remember than one of his contributions to the organisation's
constitution was that meetings must never be boring! His presence
invariably made sure they were not.
Christine

Subject: Barry Callaghan
Dear colleagues
I am very sorry to pass on the news that Barry Callaghan, Head of
Production at the Northern School of Film and Television until 1997, has
died.
Word has come from a former colleague that last Tuesday Barry was
playing at a folk festival in Mallorca when he had a heart attack and
died shortly afterwards.
I understand that attempts are being made to contact former colleagues
and students, so please pass this news to anyone you believe knew him.
Barry was at both Sheffield Hallam and Leeds Metropolitan Universities.
I know that Barry was a huge influence and source of support for
hundreds of students (and colleagues), some of whom are now very
successful. All, without exception, will mourn a hugely nice man.
I am not in touch with the family at present, although my thoughts are
with them at this immensely sad time.
If I get further information I will pass it on, as appropriate.
Ian
