With courses being 'on the doorstep' in London I can imagine that the programme of training is well established in professional development programmes in the South East and can see why courses fill up at Ridgmount Street.

I do understand why it may be difficult to fill courses outside the South East, but don't think lack of booking equates to lack of demand. There is a need for the full programme, not just the odd one or two, in the right accessible venues. CILIP's current approach could be self-fulfilling: only a basic programme being offered, lack of attendance leading to fewer courses being offered, less attendance, even fewer courses offered.

CILIP need to do some basic research and perhaps market to librarians through regional groups of CoFHE or UC&R for example, and use these as levers (crowbars?) to encourage attendance and professional development.

Regards,
Gillian Rutherford

Subject: RE: CILIP Training courses - Outside London

Hello List
Having just come back to Liverpool after delivering two days training for Cilip in London - I was interested by the flurry of emails that have appeared requesting more courses outside London.

Having been a trainer for Cilip for a number of years, and having recently led a very small regional course and had another cancelled as there were no takers, I have a reasonably informed view.

Since working for Cilip as a trainer I have delivered courses as part of the Cilip training programme in: Liverpool, Manchester, Birmingham, Edinburgh, Cardiff, Swindon, Sheffield. (there may be more!)

I have delivered "in-house" programmes for Cilip in an even more exotic range of locations

The continuing problem that Cilip faces in attempting to deliver regional training is the uncertainty involved. The hard lesson over the years is that courses that recruit well in London (some with waiting lists) simply fail to recruit outside London.

Regular attempts are made to establish regional training sites - this year Birmingham and Sheffield are being used. However recruitment is variable and cancellation fees for premises not used if courses do not recruit can prove expensive.

Penny Simmonds and her team continue to place courses in the region, locating appropriate venues etc, etc, knowing that much of the effort involved will come to nothing as some of the courses will not recruit.

I think the basic regional problem is one of size - not enough people in a particular place are interested enough in a specific course to make that course in that place viable. However the same course, run in London will recruit.

Best wishes

Keith
