Studentship title: "Sweet as sugar and good as bread": Food and cultural
identity in children's literature
This three year PhD studentship aims to understand the role of food in
children’s books as a mechanism for shaping national identity and children’s
moral codes and ideological perspectives. This research will focus on
representations of food in post-war children’s picture books in two
spatial-temporal contexts. The research will focus on the 5-10 years
immediately after WW2 and the 1990’s in the UK. It will involve a
'gastronomic mapping' of the ways that food and place are represented in
these books, noting what foods are present or notable by their absence and
what messages or social codes are being conveyed (including notions of
gluttony, greed, waste, belonging,family, etc).
The studentship is supported through the Concordat Scholarship scheme, which
is a joint venture between the British Library and the University of
Sheffield. The final degree will be a PhD in Human Geography. Dr. Megan
Blake will act as primary supervisor with Professor Peter Jackson and Alison
Bailey (Children's curator at the British Library) also offering supervisory
support. The award provides a maintenance stipend
at the standard Research Council rate (£12,600 in 2007-08 and rising
incrementally thereafter), a fee waver, and a £500 per annum research
training support grant.
If you would like more information about the project please contact Megan
Blake in Geography ([log in to unmask]). An advertisement with instructions
about the application procedure will be available shortly from
