Dear Dr Pope,
Thank you for your email of 26th March 2007. I appreciate your taking
the trouble to write to me.
As you know, the Museum of London operates one of the UK’s leading
commercial archaeology services, and has done so now for over 35 years.
There is no question but that the Museum values highly the expertise and
knowledge that the MoLAS archaeologists and specialists provide to the
heritage and the construction sectors and the important contribution
they make to understanding London’s history and indeed to international
research.
Most regrettably, there appears to be a downturn in some parts of our
work programme. The nature of the archaeology business today, as I’m
sure you know, is such that property development cycles inevitably have
an effect on our own project work timetables; in spite of the strong
volumes of work in the pipeline overall, we do not have the necessary
sustained levels of work in some specialist areas. We are currently
consulting with staff and the recognised trade union to try to mitigate
the impact of this shortfall of work. We do have to recognise, however,
that some redundancies may become necessary and we currently anticipate
that the downturn of work may affect six or seven specialist posts. No
redundancy notices have been issued at this time.
I can assure you that we shall be retaining specialists in all of our
core specialisms, and that every effort has been and continues to be
made to reprogramme and to overcome the shortfall of work in the hope
that we may avoid the need for compulsory redundancies.
Yours sincerely,
*Michael Cassidy*
