Criminal justice professionals, working with offenders to reduce crime and protect the public, have, for over a decade, been met by a surfeit of legislative and policy changes. These changes signify a move towards transparent classification and management of offenders in the community whilst safeguarding the rights and needs of victims.
This seminar will critically explore a range of national and international models of good practice in an attempt to develop a realistic approach to managing the potential harm posed by offenders by working collaboratively with them to build upon their potential to be safe.
Aims:
* to explore the relationship between academic research/discourse and probation practice
* to consider international and cultural perspectives on working effectively with offenders
* to develop an holistic practice approach to rehabilitation/public protection and community re-integration

* the validity and reliability of risk assessment and management within offender management
* rethinking motivation and responsivity within a framework of desistance and rehabilitation
