Paul,
I’ve read with interest and am somewhat overwhelmed by the complexities of
your recent e-mails to the Becta Research Network and the simple logic of
your explanations.
As an ICT Consultant and support teacher, I am presently looking at the
take-up of VLEs in Secondary schools and am somewhat concerned by the
variety of solutions being adopted. I think that I have read on more than
one occasion that the potential to transfer data from one VLE to another
is probably unlikely – is this true? Is there a standard protocol for the
exporting of data?
The reason for me asking this is that I am thinking beyond VLEs to the
stage when true PLEs are in place and would probably require an underlying
VLE.
My thinking is that the ownership of a PLE is that of the student – but
what happens if the student changes schools, or transfers to FE, HE or
beyond? Where will the PLE be stored? Can it thus be transferred (by
ftp?) from one server to another? What happens to the PLE when a person
is still following CPD at the age of 40, 50, 60 and beyond. Over whose
VLE would the PLE be handled?
I can visualise the situation when every schoolchild will be given their
own PLE – and therefore, eventually, every single child and adult in the
country. How will this be funded? Commercial funding of VLEs in HE may
not apply in the same way for Primary and Secondary education. The
problem of disclosure of personal information by children is different to
that of adults.
I trust that my questions are not too rambling or naïve or that I have
missed some obvious points!
Sincerely,
Ray Tolley
