SOLSTICE - Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning 

The SOLSTICE team at Edge Hill University is pleased to announce the 
programme for its second international conference.  The conference will 
build on the success of the 2006 conference, which attracted over 165 
delegates from across the UK and as far away as Australia and the United 
States.  It promises to be an academically stimulating and socially 
engaging event with confirmed presenters attending from universities all 
over the UK, as well as international presenters from New Zealand, 
Pakistan and Oman.  

SOLSTICE Conference 2007:  Researching eLearning for Innovation and 
Development
Friday 11 May 2007, Edge Hill University, UK


KEYNOTE SPEAKERS

Professor Allison Littlejohn (Chair of Learning Technology and Director of 
the Caledonian Academy, Glasgow Caledonian University) 

Titled: 'Towards e-maturity: embedding elearning with mainstream teaching 
and learning' Professor Littlejohn's keynote presentation will outline how 
this approach has been used to enhance e-learning across a number of 
universities, drawing largely on experiences at Glasgow Caledonian 
University in establishing the Caledonian Academy: an academic centre 
leading the development of new and innovative forms of learning through 
applied research and scholarship.

Lawrie Phipps (JISC, UK)

Titled: 'What do our Users look like? Myths and Facts'  Mr Phipps' keynote 
presentation will discuss what users (both staff and students) do, want 
and possibly need in a technology enabled education environment.


PROGRAMME AND ABSTRACTS

The programme includes two keynote presentations, an overview of the 
SOLSTICE concept and four breakout sessions with a total of 36 sessions to 
choose from. The full programme, abstracts and details of presenters are

REGISTRATION

The conference is open to everyone working in further and higher 
education, both nationally and internationally. Through the CETL funding, 
and in the spirit of dissemination, there will be no charge for conference 
attendance. However, you need to register your attendance in advance using 
the electronic registration form - 
http://www.edgehill.ac.uk/SOLSTICE/Form/Conference/Registration.htm. 

 
EVENING SEMINAR

Setting the scene for this year’s conference theme will be an evening 
seminar prior to the main conference day with the topic Research Matters: 
Setting a Contemporary eLearning Research Agenda this will be held at the 
Wrightington Hotel & Country Club. 

The seminar will be facilitated by Professor Peter Hartley, External 
Evaluator for SOLSTICE; Professor Andrew Sackville, Consultant to the 
SOLSTICE Centre and Mark Schofield, Dean of Teaching and Learning 
Development and SOLSTICE Academic Director.

The seminar will focus on two key issues: 
(a) identifying current research approaches, and their appropriateness in 
addressing the research agenda; 
(b) the setting of new research directions as tenets for a contemporary 
elearning research agenda. 

The evening will also offer the opportunity for delegates to network and 
will include a two course buffet at the hotel, there will be a charge of 
£15 for this and attendance is restricted to 30 participants only, 
delegates are advised to register as soon as possible for the conference 
and seminar to secure a place, an electronic registration form is 
available on the conference website

allocated on a first come first served basis.    


TRAVEL AND LOGISTICS

Edge Hill University is located in Ormskirk (Lancashire), which is easily 
accessible by rail and local transport, and well served for overseas 
visitors by Liverpool John Lennon Airport and Manchester Airport. For 
delegates requiring overnight accommodation, we have reserved limited 
accommodation at the Wrightington Hotel & Country Club. There are also a 
range of options in Ormskirk and the surrounding areas, booking details
