Huge thanks to Doug, or Ken (? apologies) for Sinatra's 'It Was A Very Good Year' - have just bought 'September Years' from Amazon. Remember hearing it when I was about 14, and feeling a gut-recognition of melancholy even then; about the same time as being pinned to the family sofa (still in school uniform as I recall) by Tarkovsky's 'Solaris'.
Newly Amazon-acquired, too, a Griffin radio transmitter which lets me play the iPod (left on 'shuffle' ) in the car. Last night, happened to be tearing down a black country road alarmingly splattered with animal corpses, when Nick Cave's 'No More Shall We Part' became Patti Smith's 'Summer Cannibals', became LCW's 'World Without Tears', ending perfectly with the ignition switch-off. True moments of joy.
Not only Sinatra, have also been listening to Nick Cave et al's take on nearing 50 - the 'Grinderman' CD - righteous and royally raucous. My own 50's only 4 years off , and I hope to let my feminist moustaches curl as serenely as Patti's.
Poetry in Prose - did anyone read the piece(s?) in Harry Potter - Order of the Phoenix, I think?
Off to retrieve footballs from next door's back garden...
