and then there's cheese.
looking back through the Beatles V Stones threads, I could sense a
whole lotta chin-strokin' going on. I'm guilty as charged on more than
one count, in fact this is my confessional. I include in the
chin-strokin' category any emails with one word ("Bowie",
"Pixies"[1]), mentions of the Velvets (in fact calling the Velvet
Underground, "the Velvets" is a sure-sign of uber chin-strokery, ditto
for the Deads), Nico, having seen any of these rarities at an early
concert (my entry into this category is Nirvana: I saw them at a small
gig in Bristol before they were famous[2]), any usage of
"experimental" or "rare" in conjunction with a music category or
person, any bluesperson, Jazz, funk-fusion. Before I go much further,
I have to mention Gil Scott Heron, Parliament, Earth Wind & Fire,
PWEI, Sly & the Family Stone. Nancy Sinatra. Neil Young (umm, strokes
chin) CSNY. XTC. The Bonzo Dog Doodah Band. Neil innes. Nick Drake.
Yazoo (in particular Alison Moyet). Elvis Costello. Hank Williams.
Carly Simon. Bjork ("birthday party")
To the point, there's a portion of my music collection (which
currently mounts up to 100GB) which has no name, which rarely get's
mentioned and is basically the bargain bin; one of the delights of the
interweb is you can download any amount of this crap with getting
withering looks from the sales assistant and/or friends[3][4]. It's
also supplemented by a whole heap of cheese in the soundtrack database
in my head, some of which I wish I could purge but i know that I'm
stuck with. A lot of hymns and christmas carols fall into this
category. Also, one-hit wonders.

[2] There were an awful lot of people at that first Sex Pistols gig.
More than can fit into the Manchester Free Trade Hall.
[3] Once upon a time, I went into Tower Records of London looking for
an aria of an opera which had featured on a British Airways TV advert.
Having stumbling described the piece, the assistant pointed at the
opera, some 3 LP's worth of stuff, and said, maybe I wanted a Greatest
Hits? Umm. No thanks ...
[4] My approach to classical music has been similar: go for the
cheese. Eeek, eeek.
