Subject: snap 28 March: How I Drove
How I Drove
The car was in the garage ready to go,
The pup was in the car eager to go,
I was at the wheel
keen to get going.
Backing slowly down the wide concrete drive,
I knew to avoid the two wheelie-bins
that I'd just put out -
cleared them by a few inches.
Checked downhill - no-one coming -
checked uphill - equally clear.
Backed right on out -
CRASH into George's ute*
parked demurely on the far side of the road.
Sorry, George, sorry.
I give myself over to my intense chagrin.
He's smiling like the nice neighbour he is.
I'm picking up broken glass
from his shattered side mirror,
my shattered back lights.
He's saying: keep it in perspective -
we're just back from a funeral -
she died of cancer - she was young.
(Yes, George, that was tragedy, this is farce.)
Insurance will take care of it.
Disgust with myself lasts and lasts.
Two dented vehicles, my much more dented pride...
Never before today has Pup
heard me loudly abuse myself.
Later, at Symes Crash Repairs,
its brick facade all-over climbing roses,
my damage (no worries, Max)
is checked and snapped by -
here's his card - Sam Tranquillo.
