A postdoctoral position is available in the group SIMPA (Simulation of
Interactions between Molecules, Photons and Atoms) at the Institute of
Physics in Rennes (France). It is funded for one year by the French National
Research Agency (ANR). An extension of one year is possible upon mutual
agreement.
The project title is "Cold Reactions between Neutral Species"
http://www.palms.univ-rennes1.fr/SIMPA/articles.php?lng=fr&pg=103
The work concerns the theoretical study of several atom-molecule reactions at
low temperatures, in relation with experimental groups.
The reactions between fluorine, metastable oxygen, carbon or sulfur atoms
and molecular hydrogen will be considered. They will be studied at
temperatures down to 5K by two complementary experimental techniques:
crossed-molecular beam experiments performed in the group of M. Costes
(University of Bordeaux) and the CRESU technique in the group of A. Canosa
and I. Sims (University of Rennes).
The applicant will perform quantum dynamical calculations for the above
reactions in the low energy regime. He/She will study the behaviour of
state-to-state differential and integral cross sections using ab-initio
potential energy surfaces and the hyperspherical quantum reactive scattering
method developed by J.-M. Launay of the SIMPA group.
Reaction dynamics in the low energy regime is an emerging field of research
where quantum effects such as tunnelling or scattering resonances may
strongly affect observables of experimental interest. A rigorous theoretical
description of these effects will be necessary together with a careful
analysis of scattering data to perform the necessary convolutions in order to
compare with experimental data.
The candidate should have a solid doctoral or post-doctoral training
formation in the domain of molecular quantum dynamics. Experience in
numerical methods and programming are desirable. An experience in quantum
chemistry will also be a bonus.
Candidates should provide a curriculum vitae, a letter of motivation for
carrying out this project, a list of publications and an abstract of their
research experience.
At least two letters of reference should be sent to J.-M. Launay.
Correspondance by email is preferred.
The deadline for application is June 1, 2007.
