Scottish Collieries: An Inventory of Scotland's Coal Industry in the Nationalised Era, Miles Oglethorpe, HB, 344pp, 8.5" x 11"
This book presents a brief history of the Scottish coal industry, concentrating on the period following nationalisation in 1947 until the re-privatisation and the subsequent closure of Scotland's last deep mine in 2002. At the heart of the volume is a heavily illustrated county-based inventory of all the coal mines to have worked in this period, and a glossary of mining terms.
The book is designed to be of general historical interest, and of use in an educational and research context. There are lots of maps showing colliery locations , black and white photos of collieries supported by information and detail of each Colliery. An excellent volume it is such a shame that it has been left till now where the industry has all but disappeared. In hardback form it represents value for money at £15.00 +P&P
The History of Lead Mining in the North East of England, Les Turnbull, A5, Sb, 128pp
This fascinating book is a revised, revamped edition of a definitive volume first published in 1975. Les Turnbull has a passionate interest in his subject and this book provides a thorough introduction to this fascinating area of our industrial history.
The book is packed with useful illustrations and period photographs. It ends with two suggested routes, with map references, so that interested readers may drive and view some of the remnants of our 'dark satanic mills'.
The routes take you over some of the most beautiful landscapes in England; the image on the cover of the book is part of that landscape.
