I have recently seen a photo of a steam engine claimed to have been at the
above colliery. In this case the Denby is certainly in Derybyshire.
However, confidence in site identity and date are a problem.
The initial claim was that this engine was a Buxton and Thornley but the
image shows something far more likely to be a Robey or perhaps Markham.
The only known data is that the engine was apparently built in 1893
It is a twin (duplex) with drop valves on both cylinders and, possibly,
horizontally mounted exhaust valves beneath the cylinder
Therefore a couple of queries
1) Do any List readers know which of the Denby Collieries were still at
work in the late 1950's or early 1960s ffrom when the photos (on glaas
mounted colour slides) were taken.
2) Does anyone know which might have had a steam engine installed in 1893
and, even better, can confirm the maker.
Although I have access to various lists of steam engines photographed by
the serious engine photographers of the mid to late 20th century none
appear to reference a colliery in or around Denby
