This is not an easy thing to do as you know already.
I would suggest to contact the NUM (or whatever it might be called now), and
see what their records might show. At the end of the day local knowledge may
prove valuable, so one could start by asking about in the area - there is
bound to be someone who will know something.
There must be deeds somewhere so a local solicitor might be able to help;
and obviously there is the Land Registry that might well turn up something.
You may prob. know all the above already, but I hope it might be of some use
