Painting a Mine with Light - A pictorial history of Wheal Jane a Cornish tin mine. John Peck, A5, Sb, 65pp
The title describes in full the contents which include 57 Black and white, 27 colour plus cover photos. However you should not simply dismiss this as yet another photograph book.John was appointed as official photographer by the mine owners 1972 and therefore had the unique opportunity of being able to photograph mining development, equipment and methods used. These include shaft sinking, raise boring, holmans rock drilling, Eimco's in use, surveying, tunnelling machinery etc.
The book, however, isn't just an excuse to show off the authors photographic genius as he very carefully details the modern story of the mine through use of photographs supported by useful descriptions where possible individual miners are named. Details the mines development and through to its eventual demise showing the people involved in the struggle to keep it open.
This is an excellent little volume some pictures are little grainy but otherwise I have no hesitation in recommending this book
£6.95 + P&P
