(with apologies for cross-posting; please circulate widely)
Registration is now open, and a provisional programme has been
announced, for the British Society for the History of Science's Annual
Conference 2007, to be held in Manchester from 28 June - 1 July.
Please visit our conference webpages at
<www.bshs.org.uk/bshs2007>
to read a copy of the programme, register online by credit/debit card,
download paper registration forms, or find out more about the conference
location. The deadline for registration is FRIDAY 18 MAY.
The Society was founded in 1947, so at this year's meeting we will
celebrate our sixtieth anniversary. In association with the University
of Manchester's Centre for the History of Science, Technology and
Medicine (CHSTM), the Society has arranged a wide variety of events and
displays, including:
* Conference dinner (Saturday) in the Power Hall of the Museum of
Science and Industry: your chance to dine amid the world’s largest
collection of steam mill engines and locomotives
* Presidential Address (Friday): Professor Frank James on the uses of
Michael Faraday in the twentieth century, followed by drinks reception
in the Mammals Gallery of the Manchester Museum
* Past, present and future (Friday): a sixtieth-anniversary discussion
plenary including BSHS past presidents William H Brock, John Hedley
Brooke, Geoffrey Cantor and David Knight
* Outreach day (Saturday): sessions for wider audiences -- or anyone
professionally engaged with them -- featuring the latest online history
of science resources, and news from two BSHS Outreach and Education
Committee initiatives: Object Stories, using museum artefacts to engage
the public, and role-play in the history of disease (a special
presentation featuring the BSHS Strolling Players)
* Science and film (Saturday): a public event drawing on current work in
science communication studies
* Jodrell Bank at 50: also celebrating a significant anniversary this
year is the University of Manchester's iconic Lovell radio telescope,
inaugurated in 1957 and swiftly co-opted into the technological
propaganda war heralded by Sputnik. We mark the occasion with an
insider’s account and photographic display
* Science and the city: CHSTM volunteers will conduct a guided walk
(Saturday) to explain the complexities of Manchester's health, wealth
and scientific identity, plus a special introductory lecture (Thursday)
from Professor John Pickstone
* Academic publishers' and second-hand bookstalls, plus displays of BSHS
products and materials
The conference also features a packed and diverse speaker programme,
with panels devoted to subjects including: Indian science and medicine;
scientists in industry; the histories of chemistry, healthcare and
veterinary science; Cold War contexts; communications; serotherapy;
speciation; spaces of technology and geographies of medicine; and
poisoning in popular literature and practice. There will also be
presentations on the challenges and opportunities of archival collection.
We very much hope to see you there!
