medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Another unusual saint, on account of his small stature, is St
Neot. He is said to have been so small that he had to stand on a stool to
say mass and so small that he could not reach the lock in the church
door without the same stool. According to one account, he hurried to the
to let in an importunate visitor who was hammering on the door for
admission but forgot his stool. However, the lock proceeded to descend
until it was low enough for him to insert the key and open it, glorifying
the Lord who 'openeth and no man shutteth.' On this basis he is surely a
candidate for patron saint of locksmiths.
Cheers,
Martin
