Unacceptable Art: Rejected Commissions in Renaissance Italy

Patrons had a highly effective means to influence the appearance and
assure the quality of the art and architecture they commissioned: they
could reject both plans for projects and finished works. Though
patronage studies have documented the use of this tool, its operation
and importance have been largely ignored. The session will explore the
impact of rejections on Italian art (works in Italy, by Italian artists,
or made for Italian patrons).
We invite interested scholars to send a 150 word abstract to both chairs
by May 4.
Note: the chairs expect that this session will provide the basis for a
publication. Their session at 2002 developed into The Patron’s Payoff:
Economic Frameworks for Conspicuous Commissions in Renaissance Italy
(Princeton University Press, in press).
April 3-6, 2008, the annual meeting of the Renaissance Society of
America will be held in Chicago; see www.rsa.org
