I am trying to identify an item in a collection I am currently
cataloguing. It consists of a single folded sheet of paper, 35 x 19½ cm,
bearing 12 black-and-white illustrations. These are evidently the
illustrations for 12 chapters of a book, since they are numbered Chap. 1
- Chap. 12. They also have the following captions:
1. Fido sets out with his master's dinner.
2. A plot is laid.
3. Fido drinks - and the basket disappears.
4. Fido to the rescue!
5. An awkward noose!
6. Fido a captive!
7. Good-bye!
8. Dinnerless!
9. Fighting for the spoil.
10. On the brink.
11. Fido triumphant - boys repentant.
12. Dinner at last.
The folded sheet is in an envelope, with an illustration of carol
singers pasted onto it, and above this a strip of paper bearing the
caption "Ye [picture of dog] & ye [picture of basket]". The only other
clues are the name W.G. Hooper in the illustration for chapter 1, and
the name Swainse, apparently the artist's signature, on the illustration
for chapter 12.
I have been unable to find any clue in printed or electronic sources as
to what this item might be. I would be grateful for any light anyone
can shed on the matter.
