Dear All,
There is also this:
The parent company, Reed Elsevier, has a Code of Ethics and Business
Conduct which states:
"Reed Elsevier is committed to ensuring compliance with the principles
of the United Nations Global Compact related to protection of human
rights. Specifically, Reed Elsevier supports and respects international
human rights within the Company's sphere of influence. Reed Elsevier
also seeks to ensure that the Company is not complicit in human rights
abuses."
(Source: Reed Elsevier, Code of Ethics and Business Conduct, September
2006, available from
http://www.reed-elsevier.com/index.cfm?articleid=1147 )
It is the last sentence particularly that strikes me: can you really say
that you are seeking to ensure that you are not complicit in human
rights abuses if you organise arms fairs patronised by regimes who
oppress their people with the arms that you enable them to buy?
This is another part of the campaign, in addition to the issue of
whether owning an arms fair organiser is at odds with owning a major
academic publisher.

No doubt the party line Tony. Editorial freedom is not the issue here.
The parent company simply cannot have a foot in the arms industry camp
where we know death, injury, subjugation and control are important
considerations, also in the SM&T publishing camp where health and
humanitarianism (not to mention "first do no harm") are guiding
principles, and claim to be untainted.

The Defence System & Equipment International exhibition is organised by
Reed Exhibitions, which like the Elsevier publishing company is owned by
Reed Elsevier PLC. There is no working connection between the two
companies. No member of Elsevier staff is involved with organising the
exhibition, and freedom of editorial judgement is a fundamental working
principle throughout Elsevier.
