Zap! Bam! Kerplow! Making an impact with graphic novels
10th July 2007
The Lighthouse, Wolverhampton
• What exactly is a graphic novel?
• Should my library stock graphic novels?
• How do you go about building a graphic novels collection for young people?
• How can I use graphic novels to encourage boys to read?
• What activities can I run for graphic novel enthusiasts in my library?
• How can I promote graphic novels effectively?
If you’re interested in these and other questions about graphic novels for
young people in libraries, Evidence Base is organising a one-day event in
Wolverhampton on 10th July. Children’s young people’s librarians, school
librarians, SLS staff and anyone else with an interest in providing,
promoting and using graphic novels for young people in libraries are all
welcome.
The day will be led by Mel Gibson, who has run training and promotional
events about visual literacy in relation to picture books, comics and
graphic novels since 1993. She has also worked as a children’s librarian,
lecturer and literacy consultant and is now a lecturer specialising in
childhood, children’s books and media at the University of Northumbria.
Other contributors will be:
• Angela Robinson, Literacy Development Officer – Projects with Blackburn
with Darwen Borough Council who has run a number of successful promotional
events such as talks, comic strip drawing activities and a free comic book
day.
• Tina Campbell, Libraries Without Walls link worker from Wolverhampton, who
was involved in Wolverhampton’s graphic novels project in 2006, when
teenagers from Parkfield High School worked with storyteller, graphic
novellist and illustrator, Fran O'Boyle, to design and create their own
graphic novel comic.
