THE ETUC PETITION ON PUBLIC SERVICES
"FOR HIGH-QUALITY PUBLIC SERVICES, ACCESSIBLE TO ALL"
"The European TUC has launched an online petition in
support of quality public services in the European
Union. The aim is collect 1 million signatures by the
time of the ETUC Congress in Spain in May. Public
services in Europe have been undermined in recent
years by a series of EU laws aimed at opening them up
to liberalisation and competition. Transport, energy
and postal services have been almost totally
liberalised.
Trade unions across Europe fought a very successful
campaign last year to protect public services such as
health and social services from the Services
Directive, but despite this campaign the European
Commission is likely to bring forward new proposals to
liberalise these services later this year. That's why
the ETUC has launched the petition at this time.
UNISON General Secretary Dave Prentis was one of the
first people to sign the petition at the end of last
year. Branches are encouraged to get members to sign
up. We want you to advertise the petition in your
branch newsletters for example, or by getting people
to sign up at branch meetings. Why not send an email
around to all your branch members and work colleagues?
You can make a start yourself by signing the petition
on line today, just go to
http://www.petitionpublicservice.eu and help get the
message across that Europe needs quality public
services."

NOTE: We originally received this from Paul Catherall,
webmaster for Information for Social Change*. For
those interested in the struggles against the
commodification, capitalisation and privatisation of
public services in the EU, this is an important
development. Anyone can sign this petition. When we
signed, 25,739 other people had already signed. If you
can spare a moment, please take a look, and consider
signing yourself.
