Here at Leeds University Library we are reviewing our fines for overdue items. I am interested not only in what fines you charge, but also the payment options you offer, fines thresholds etc.
I see that this topic has not been discussed on lis-link for the past 2 or 3 years, so I would be grateful if you could answer the questions below and I will summarise responses for the list.
1. What fines do you charge for overdue items?
We currently charge the following fines;
* Standard loan items 30p per day
* 7-day loan items 40p per day
* 3- day loans - 50p per day
* 1 day loans - £1 per day
* 4 hour loans -£1 for first hour & 50p thereafter
2. Do you charge higher fines on late returned recalled items?
3. Do you allow customers to borrow if they have fines?
4. If so, what fines threshold do you operate, i.e. above what value is borrowing prohibited?
5. Do customers have to clear their fines periodically? E.g.
* every semester
* annually
* before they leave
* never
6. What payment systems do you operate? E.g
* cash at counters
* debit or credit card at counters/by phone
* online payments,
* self-service payment points taking cash/debit cards/campus smart cards
* other
7. How frequently do you increase your fines?
8. Does charging fines act as a means of encouraging customers to return or renew books promptly?
9. Any other information that might be useful?
