Constructing a Thesaurus, 28-29 March 2007, at Aslib in London
Programme Features
This two-day course, based on the new BSI standard, will give you a
practical guide to producing and maintaining a thesaurus.
• Introduction to thesaurus construction
• Facet analysis
• Term collection
• Term organisation
• Thesaurus display
• Thesaurus maintenance and operation
• Practical sessions
Why you should attend:
Most text retrieval systems require the support of a structured and defined
vocabulary to perform effectively. In-house systems often fall short of
their potential performance, mostly because of an inadequate supporting term
vocabulary. This course is excellent for those who need to develop an
understanding of using language to construct a thesaurus. It is of
particular value to database managers, librarians, information officers and
system analysts operating and developing text retrieval systems outside the
library environment. The two days will involve a mix of lectures,
discussions and practical work.
On completing this course, you will be able to:
• understand the functions of a thesaurus and why (or why not) one is needed
in a particular retrieval situation
• understand the role of organisation and knowledge in thesaurus
construction and the value of facet analysis techniques in organisation of
thesaurus concepts
• recognise the importance of the initial selection terms and the consistent
application of their chosen definitions in use
• appreciate the standard rules for vocabulary control and thesaural
relationships
• understand how to incorporate into thesaurus design the constraints of
facilities offered by the retrieval software
• select the most appropriate form of thesaural display
• appreciate the ways in which thesauri are being used on the Internet
• understand new forms of thesaurus being developed for the digital
environment
