<<The majority of those who spoke at the GPC on Thursday had consulted,
and the mood was reported as angry, but not one of action.
This is the same view I have locally, anger, but the prospect of
concerted action is not real. >>
And yet, I have heard absolutely nothing about consultation over here in
N Ireland. It would seem that at least some on this list--who would
normally have their ears tuned to such things--have not heard anything
either.
Translating anger into action requires leadership. Regrettably, we vote
for representatives for LMC etc. We do not, by and large, seek or vote
for leaders. And let me be honest here---I am not a leader and don't
know if I would want to be one but I have come across a few in my time
who fit the bill. It has been a long time since we have had real leaders
at the top of our representative bodies.
But then, I think that we might just manage with hard-nosed negotiators.
The experience in Canada has been interesting to observe in the years I
have been going there. The profession is treated with respect there and
negotiated contracts are respected also.
So what's the answer? I don't know but we sure as hell cannot keep going
the way we are. nGMS has been an object lesson in proving that there is
no fun or satisfaction in just working for money, with the exception of
a handful of GP financial experts who seem to get something out of it.
Speaking as a patient who has had serious illness and still needs the
odd bit of medical attention, with family members suffering illness, I
really cannot see anything in nGMS which has improved the lot of people
who are _sick_.

Anger somewhat lessened by recent arrival of Canadian licence renewal....
