Subject: sustainable estates for the 21st century: 4 PhD studentships
********** PLEASE DISTRIBUTE WIDELY ************
Applications are invited for four full-time PhD Research Studentships
starting in September 2007.
The main objective of the research is to understand the complex driving
forces influencing estates in the Scottish uplands, and how their owners
and managers make decisions that permit them to ensure that their estates
fulfil their diverse roles and are sustainable. Related key issues include
the economic and employment benefits of estates to local communities, and
connections between land ownership and land management. Two students will
focus on private estates; one on NGO-owned estates; and one on
community-owned estates. Common methodologies will be used to ensure
inter-comparability, while leaving room for individual development. The
research will be conducted in collaboration with stakeholders and
policy-makers.
Candidates will normally be expected to hold either a 2:1 or First class
honours degree, or a Masters degree, ideally with relevant
interdisciplinary experience. Flexibility and an appetite for an applied
and co-ordinated approach to research are essential.
Each studentship includes a maintenance allowance (*12,000 per annum) and
tuition fees at the UK/EU rate. The award is available to UK/EU students
who have been resident in the EU over the past three years.
Interested candidates can contact Professor Martin Price
([log in to unmask]) for informal enquiries (except from 2 -10
April).
Applicants should send a CV and a statement of reasons for applying for the
position, and provide two letters of reference.
