QUEENSLAND UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY, BRISBANE, AUSTRALIA
SCHOOL OF ECONOMICS AND FINANCE
Scholarship-supported places are available for candidates interested in reading for a research masters degree, and who are available to enrol by early July 2007 on a full-time basis.
Normally, the degree comprises one semester of coursework at the equivalent of honours level, and two semesters of a research project. The coursework component may be waived where equivalent credit can be granted. See http://www.studyfinder.qut.edu.au/ for information about course structures and fees.
Scholarships will be tenable for up to 18 months, and are open to Australian citizens or permanent residents, or New Zealand citizens, who are eligible for HECS-exempt enrolment in a research degree. (This will normally be anyone who has not previously enrolled in a research degree in Australia.) The value of the scholarship is subject to final confirmation: by way of indication, the Australian Postgraduate Award was A$19,231 per annum, tax free, in 2006. The present scholarship will also be tax free. Additional emoluments may be available through teaching or research assistant appointments, or through scholarship top-ups offered by the School. The cost of living comfortably in Brisbane for a student is reckoned at about A$16,000 per annum.
Exceptional candidates who are not Australian or New Zealand nationals may be eligible for a full or partial fee waiver, and are welcome to apply.
Candidates should have a strong undergraduate or honours degree in statistics, mathematics, econometrics, economics, finance, or some other strongly quantitative discipline (such as some strands of engineering): a grade point average (GPA) (on the Australian scale) of at least 5.5 is essential, and a GPA of at least 6 is desirable.
The field of the research topic is reasonably wide: it can be in such topics as time series; non-parametric econometrics; statistical aspects of finance, including high-frequency finance; or weather-related finance. Topics will be negotiated before a final offer is made.
QUT reserves the right to make no appointment, or to appoint a candidate other than a respondent to this advertisement.
Enquiries by email are welcome: contact details are below.
Applications should comprise a brief CV including a transcript of undergraduate results, and a short description of the research field of interest. Certified copies of documents are not required at this time.
Applications must be received by email no later than 21 March 2007.
