Tim - if you really want fun (and since it's Friday) have a look at
Australia's first spam conviction.
Briefly, in April 2006 the Australian Communications and Media Authority
(ACMA) responsible for enforcing Australia's 2003 Spam Act (came into
effect April 2004), brought a case against a Wayne Mansfield and his
company, Clarity1 Pty Ltd, for both sending unsolicited commercial
electronic messages, and for using harvested address lists.
In October 2006 Nicholson J in the Federal Court in Perth awarded a
pecuniary penalty of AUS$4.5 million against Clarity1 and AUS$1 million
against Mansfield. If my maths are correct that's over £18 million and
>£400 000 respectively. Australia's anti spam legislation sets out
penalties of up to $1.1 million a day for repeat corporate offenders.
Now that's enforcement!
rgds,
Kevin
