DIASPORA AND SPATIAL POLITICS
Tuesday May 22nd 2007, University of Exeter, UK
Sponsored by the Governance, Ethics and Social Justice Research Group
Department of Geography, University of Exeter
As a notion, diaspora has had much invested in it; on the one hand it has
come to symbolise fluid identities and syncretic cultures, on the other it
has also become synonymous with the description and classification of
diasporic, homeland-centred, ethno-religious ‘groups’. What has often been
missing from such accounts is a detailed, material and contextualised
understanding of how politics is involved in the process of diasporic
formation and existence. In particular, the relationships between diaspora,
politics and space need to be better understood and explored, in order to
engage with debates on the relevance of diaspora to the contemporary world.
To this end, this symposium welcomes theoretical and empirical papers on
notions of diaspora in relation to notions of space and place. Potential
themes could include:
Geopolitics, relationships between host countries and homelands
Diaspora and globalisation – processes of (im)mobility
The nation-state, nationalism, national identity
Processes of de/re-territorialisation
Spatial politics of participation
Identity politics, homeland-orientated politics, politicisation
Diaspora as a political project
Strategic notions of ‘community’, home and belonging
Diasporic Space
