Subject: Promoting mental health in communities: psychological perspectives
Dear fellow List members,
I thought some of you might be interested in feedback about the above event in London on Friday 2nd February which was organised by the BPS College of Fellows Steering Group.
As mentioned the overarching theme for the day was: Promoting mental health in communities. Within that Elaine Swift, George Black, Cathy McCormack and I collectively presented a session entitled 'Psychology for transformation', Serdar Degirmencioglu (Beykent University, Turkey) presented a 'developmental and social justice perspective' and Ed Cairns (University of Ulster) presented on 'empowering peaceful communities'. This was followed by discussion groups and a plenary session in which representatives of the groups reported back on discussion themes.
Feedback from those attending reported the following as being especially appreciated: that both political and personal dimensions were considered; that inputs were made by community project members as well as psychologists; that psychologists were honestly portrayed as part of the problem and the solution; that psychologists from different BPS Divisions coming together by the day; the variety of topics on a single theme; the international nature of the day.
Feedback from those attending also included a call for community psychology to be recognised in some way by the BPS.
All tickets for the day were sold out well in advance and the venue was at full capacity indicating a lot of interest. The vitality and sophistication of discussion in groups really impressed me as did the quality of plenary reporting back. It seemed to me that, though I was pleased to see some members of this network, most of those attending the day were not people I knew from this list or the annual conference.
Whilst I can think of aspects which could have been even better, I think, on balance, the day was a success and augurs well for other community psychology developments in the UK.
David
