Hi Ian
Thanks for this - though it was a good moon!
In and out of the Oak Tavern last night, the eclipse was spectacular (as
seen in Lowestoft). Indeed, the bar was secondary to Earth's shadow slowly
falling over Moon.
Media said it was copper, or copper-red; locals described it as the Orange
Moon. Whatever, for myself it was Beauty.
The best of Earth's nocturnal shadow: the changing of the Moon's flat disc
into an orb - and, in that process, the Moon actually looked suspended in
the sky over us and not just part of heaven's flat patchwork.
Imagine back those hundreds-of-thousands of years ago when the first
hunter-gatherers saw the Orange Moon (as we did last night) - the flatness
turned into a rounded pebble! A pebble in 'heaven!'
I don't think space travel has advanced humanity at all over old telescopes
and new Earthly hi-tech observations. Clinically/scientifically we know the
Moon is dust. Yet the Moon still turns our tides and patterns menstruation
cycles and still finds poets active on a Full Moon - or mad for a day.
Despite the dust, the Moon must be forever for poets!
Rupert
