All applications for this studentship should be submitted to Dan
Holloway at the address below by midday on 1 May 2007.
Postgradute studentship on 'Global China' at the University of
Manchester
PhD Supervisors
Prof Hong LIU (Manchester)
Dr Frank Pieke (Oxford)
The student first will take a one year foundational 'MA in China in a
Comparative Perspective' where they will study Mandarin Chinese language
and area studies courses on China. After the MA, the student will
continue studying Mandarin, including intensive language training at a
Chinese partner university such as Renmin University of China, as part
of a 3 year PhD programme.
After the MA, the PhD research will examine how the integration of China
into global society over the last twenty-five years has impacted our
understanding of contemporary China. There are many dimensions in this
multi-faceted process of globalization, including an unprecedented scale
and rapid pace of Chinese corporations investing abroad, the
multi-directional flows of Chinese population both inside and outside
China, and the formation of new political and cultural identities that
have to be interpreted beyond the conventional framework guided by the
nation-state. The PhD research would examine the nature and
characteristics of transnational flows of capital, culture, ideas, and
human capital in the Chinese-speaking world whose center of gravity is
increasingly geared toward the mainland.
Using interviews with Chinese public intellectuals and policy-makers, an
interpretive analysis of academic books/articles and popular media
products, and archival research of official documents, the thesis would
consider issues such as:
How does the Chinese diaspora, especially those born in the PRC who have
emigrated overseas since 1978, contribute to the globalizing process of
China?
What are the new patterns of interaction that can be conceptualized
differently from the "Cultural China" or "Greater China" paradigms?
In what way can a transnational approach be used to understand the
changing dynamics of the PRC, the broader Chinese-speaking world, and
relations with major powers such as the USA, EU and Japan?
The first year of the PhD programme would be spent in Manchester
developing the research proposal, while also continuing research methods
training and language training. The second year would be spent on
research, including a three month period of fieldwork in China. The
final year of study would be for writing up the thesis.
