Dear Dr Troscianko,
I am contacting you on behalf of The Colour Group, regarding a recent
proposal by the CG committee to request that Dr Richard Gregory present the
Newton Lecture on the afternoon of Wednesday 1st March, 2006, at the City
University, London EC1, and that, at this time, he accept the silver Newton
Medal, an award which has been presented by the Group to distinguished
scientists every two years since 1963.
The talk can be for about an hour, and include time for questions. Often,
the presentation is followed by a dinner.
Rather than contacting Dr Gregory directly I am asking if, in the first
instance, you would inform him of the committee's intentions, and ascertain
if he is able and willing to travel to London to present a talk and accept
the medal. I can write a formal letter later on. Having just inherited the
mantle of the chairmanship of the Colour Group, I am not entirely sure how
to proceed. I was chairman 10 years ago, when Don Pavey (whom I know well)
was presented with the medal.
I have met Dr Gregory on a few occasions, one being about 10 years ago when
he presented a talk to Marks and Spencer at its Baker Street HQ (with
Richard Bright of Interalia) and we had an informal meal afterwards. I was
also at the Royal Institution when Dr Gregory attempted to converse with
Howard Hodgkin, who seemed either not to have any cohesive art theories or
else was reluctant to discuss them. I saw you present your talk ('Colour in
natural scenes') to the Colour Group last January, and also remember a talk
you presented at the Royal College of Art in 1983/84 when you demonstrated
the McCullough effect, among other things. As an artist who sometimes paints
landscapes, and talks about landscape art to students, I was interested in
the distinction that you seemed to be making (at the Institute of
Ophthalmology) that the yellow/blue axis was particularly useful for
assessing features some distance away, whereas the red/green axis seemed for
useful for judging figure/grounds close-to, or within arm's reach.
Yours sincerely,
Roy Osborne
