Dear All,

I've been working through the preview data below for the Guardian and I
found some anomalies (particularly with regard to the student FTE by
Guardian subject). After conversations with HESA we've found it's
because of an error with the mappings, which happened during the
Guardian's processing of the file. This may be due to the way I
submitted the mapping file and might not apply to anyone else but with
the Guardian's track record I thought it wise to let you all know.

Regards,
Sarah

Dear colleague

I am writing to notify you of a data request that HESA has received and
processed. The request is from The Guardian and the data will be used
within this year's Guardian University Guide. The reference number for
this request is 26236.

The data requested of HESA are (all items disaggregated by each HEI) :

Item 1 Student enrolments by level of study and Guardian subject group
2005/06
Item 2a Total FTE of student enrolments by level of study and Guardian
subject group 2005/06
Item 2b Total FTE of student enrolments by level of study and cost
centre 2005/06
Item 3 First degree students by gender and Guardian subject group 2005/06
Item 4 First degree students by mode of study and Guardian subject group
2005/06
Item 5 Full-time, first year, first degree students by age group and
Guardian subject group 2005/06
Item 6 UK domiciled, first degree students by ethnicity and Guardian
subject group 2005/06
Item 7 First degree students by disability status and Guardian subject
group 2005/06
Item 8 First year, first degree students by socio economic
classification and Guardian subject group 2005/06
Item 9 First degree students by domicile and Guardian subject group 2005/06
Item 10 First degree qualifiers by Guardian subject group and
classification 2005/06
Item 11 Mean tariff scores of full-time, first year, first degree
students by Guardian subject group 2005/06
Item 12 Destinations of UK domiciled full-time, first degree graduates
and leavers by activity and Guardian subject group 2004/05

Item 13 UK domiciled full-time, first degree graduates entering
employment (including those working and studying) by SOC 2000 job type
and Guardian subject group 2004/05

Item 14 Student:staff ratios by cost centre 2005/06
Item 15 Total expenditure by cost centre (academic departments only) and
type of expenditure 2005/06
Item 16 Expenditure of academic services by type 2005/06
Item 17a 'Value-added' scores (method 1) by Guardian subject group 2005/06
Item 17b 'Value-added' scores (method 2) by Guardian subject group 2005/06
Item 18 Spend per student by cost centre (academic cost centres only)
2005/06

A brief summary of the main changes from last year's Guardian data request:
1. Item 2b is a new item
2. Items 17a and 17b are also new items this year. However Item 17a is
an update of 'value-added' data that were last supplied to The Guardian
in 2003. There are two alternative methodologies (set by The Guardian)
for generating these data because the Guardian wish to assess the
results of each.

3. Item 18 is a new item. The spend per student figures presented here
are provided in order to make any anomalies in the comparison between
finance and student data by cost centre more easily apparent. For the
actual spend per student figures used in the Guardian University Guide,
an apportioned element of expenditure on academic services will also be
incorporated into the figures by The Guardian analysts.

4. This year we have included a sector comparison table for each data
item. This will allow you to compare the figures for your HE institution
with the equivalent total figures for all HEIs. The sector comparison
tables are located below the tables for each HE institution within the
Excel worksheets.

5. Last year's data items on academic staff numbers by employment
function and grade have not be requested this year.

The above data items have been prepared and are now available for
preview from the usual Data Dissemination System (DDS) web-pages. The
data are due to be released to the Guardian on 2 April 2007 so I will
need any comments back from HEIs by 12p.m. on that day.

If you have any comments or queries regarding the data please contact me
at [log in to unmask]

Regards
