Hi Alan

The British Standard document BS8300:2001 gives guidance on this topic
as follows:

Workplaces:

For workplaces where the number of employees who are disabled motorists
is known, the minimum number of designated spaces should be one space
for each employee who is a disabled motorist, plus at least one space or
2% of the total capacity, whichever is the greater, for visiting
disabled motorists, with a minimum of one space.

For workplaces where the number of employees who are disabled motorists
is not known, at least one space or 5% of the total parking capacity
should be designated as parking for disabled motorists (to include both
employees and visitors), whichever is the greater.

Shopping, recreation and leisure facilities:

For shopping, recreation and leisure facilities, the minimum number of
designated spaces should be one space for each employee who is a
disabled motorist, plus 6% of the total capacity for visiting disabled
motorists.
(Note: The numbers of designated spaces may need to be greater at hotels
and sports stadia that specialise in accommodating groups of disabled
people).

Railway car parks:

For railway car parks, the minimum number of designated spaces should be
one space for each employee who is a disabled motorist, plus 5% of the
total capacity for visiting disabled motorists.

Churches:

At least two parking spaces designated for use by disabled motorists
should be provided in car parking facilities at churches.

Crematoria and cemetery chapels:

A minimum of two parking spaces designated for use by disabled motorists
should be provided as close as possible to the assembly point of a
crematorium or cemetery chapel.

The document also has a layout that shows a 1200 mm wide safety zone for
boot access and cars with rear hoists.

I hope that this information is of some assistance.

Hi
The Dft Traffic Advisory Leaflet 05/95 "Parking for Disabled People"
says 2 bays or 5% whichever is the greater for car parks with up to 200
bays and 6 bays plus 2% for car parks over 200 bays. The leaflet can be
found here http://tinyurl.com/2vedcs . The guidance doesn't appear to
allow for a 1200mm zone at the rear of the bay for vehicles with a tail
lift though...... and still refers to the "Orange" Badge......

Bay size and design can be found in Building Regs Part M, Diagram 2 and
also BS 8300:2001, Figures 2 & 3.....

I'd be interested to know of more recent guidance on percentages if
anyone knows of any......

Regards
Alan Hunt

Hi. Please could someone confirm the percentage of spaces in an office
car park which must be designated for disabled parking/ Also, must all
the spaces be of a specified size? I have a situation where a manager
would like some of the spaces to be narrowing than others.

Many thanks.

Kind regards.
