Research Assistant
Oxford University Centre For The Environment, Transport Studies Unit
Grade 7: Salary £25,889 - £31,840 P.A.
The Transport Studies Unit (TSU) has an established international
reputation in the fields of sustainable transport, transport policy
analysis, transport economics, transport and the environment, and
transport and land use planning. The TSU's mission is to promote
excellence in transport research and teaching. Particular emphasis is
placed on understanding the social, economic, behavioural and
environmental implications of transport over both time and space. The
Unit's work ranges in geographic scale from the local to the global whilst
the full spectrum of quantitative and qualitative research techniques is
deployed. Recent research sponsors include the Rees Jeffreys Fund, the
Department of Transport, ESRC, EPSRC, the European Environment Agency and
the European Commission.
The TSU has a two-year post available for a Research Assistant, starting
on 1 May 2007 to work on a range of current small scale projects and to
help expand the research portfolio of the group http://www.tsu.ox.ac.uk/.
The successful applicant would be expected to develop their own research
interests, but to link in closely with the existing projects being run
within the TSU and the Environmental Change Institute, and in OUCE more
widely - http://www.geog.ox.ac.uk/. Applications will need to demonstrate
skills in transport, but as they relate more widely to policy, cities,
economics and the environment. Apart from having a relevant high quality
undergraduate degree, the applicants should be able to demonstrate their
research capabilities through a research based masters or doctoral thesis.
Evidence of publications in quality academic journal would also be an
advantage. There will be opportunities to help with tutorials and other
teaching within the department. In addition to the primary research role
of the post, some time will also be allocated to helping the Director run
the TSU. This administrative role will involve setting up a database
within the TSU, helping update the website, representing the TSU within
OUCE so that its profile is maintained and enhanced, and other tasks.
Individuals interested in joining this lively and growing group should
contact Professor David Banister, Director of the TSU -
