Hi Katherine
The real 2007a release is out now, so I would try to repeat your
experiment after having installed the non-beta version. I just tried with
SPM5, and it seems that the problems I and others experienced with the
beta version has now disappeared. I have attached a slightly altered
makefile (I added the following line: MEX_BIN =
/Applications/MATLAB74/bin/mex) which made SPM5 run on my iMac.
