NEW POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMME FOR
SEPTEMBER 2007 ENTRY
(awaiting final approval)
MRes in Social and Public Policy
The MRes in Social and Public Policy is a new degree that gives you the opportunity to undertake ESRC-recognised* research training in social and public policy, whilst carrying out your own research. Taught in Politics in the School of Social Sciences at the University of Manchester, it gives you the chance to join one of the biggest interdisciplinary groups of social scientists in the UK, whilst focusing on developing the ability to undertake, evaluate and commission research in the public sector. It is ideal preparation for undertaking further postgraduate research, for developing your skills as a professional public-sector researcher, or for enabling you to evaluate and commission research in social and public policy. As you can undertake the course either full-time over a year, or part-time over two years, and you can tailor your research to reflect your own interests and experiences, it is ideal if you want to combine study and work commitments.
Contents of the programme
Students will undertake six taught modules, including:
. Quantitative Research Methods
. Qualitative Research Methods
. Dissertation Research Design
. Governance and the Welfare State
. Research Issues in Social and Public Policy
. One module to reflect a chosen research topic
They will also undertake a dissertation project carrying out original research in the public sector and supervised by world-class social and public policy researchers. The degree therefore not only gives you excellent research training, but the chance to put that training into practice. The programme can be undertaken full-time (12 months) or part-time (24 months).
