Call for Papers
Mediating New Ireland
The Irish Media Research Network announces its third annual conference on 15
June 2007.
Much of Irelandıs recent social and economic change has been broadly
positive. Inward migration has lent Irish society a new diversity and
energy, while notions of national and cultural identities have, arguably,
become more fluid. Nevertheless, other more negative aspects of Irelandıs
transformation, such as perceived crises in health and criminal justice,
have stimulated a national questioningı about who the Irish are and where
the country is going. Communications media have played an important but
sometimes subtle role in these transformations. They have simultaneously
shaped and revealed this uncertain landscape. This conference aims to allow
researchers to share perspectives and findings on all aspects of Irish media
to improve our understanding of social change and the new Irelandı.
Proposals for papers are invited from Irish and International researchers,
including postgraduate students. We also encourage the participation of
representatives of the media industry, NGOıs and the voluntary and community
sector. Collective proposals for panel discussions are also invited.
Proposals (max. 300 words) should be sent by 30th March 2007 to Gavan
Titley, Centre for Media Studies, NUI, Maynooth (email:
[log in to unmask]). The conference programme, including an invited
keynote address, will be confirmed by 16 April 2006.
