Thanks Mark
I had seen this already - Marek had mentioned it prior to a session I
had organised involving Marek, Paul Toro, Adele Laing and myself at the
Polish ECPA conference which I had proposed to create an opportunity to
problemetise the relationship between the US CP organisation (SCRA
(Society for Community Research and Action) /APA Div 27) and European
community psychologies but which got rejigged to involve others because
illness prevented two of us attending.
I regard this 'global' networking initiative (and the even more alarming
SCRA (the voice of US CP) move to promote 'internationalism' via the
very US-ish 'visioning' process) (along with US domination of textbooks,
edited 'scholarly' books, journals, travelling fellowships etc) as
ominous manifestations of US intellectual and ideological colonising.
I appreciate it is presented as (and presumably seen in good faith by
its proponents) as about international cooperation rather than
domination but I fear it is just another form of global cultural and
intellectual ideological (in addition to economic and military)
domination by the US: first Hollywood, Coke, Macfastfood etc . . . Then
. . . . community psychology. Another manifestation of the scary US
military coined phrase 'Full Spectrum Dominance'?

I think that if we want a UK community psychology which is
socio-culturally relevant, ideologically critical and practically
effective in contesting oppression we should regard these overtures with
great caution and run a mile from thinking we can influence the US by
swimming alongside trying to give it a nudge to change direction without
getting swallowed up (do a Blair re Bush for Social (in?)Action Research
in other words)
I would be interested in debate about the forms which US intellectual
colonisation of community psychology take.
Maybe US colonisation of UK community psychology could be a discussion
theme at the York UK conference?
