But doesn't Zoe's email raise a wider question? With the increase in
student debt, is it realistic to expect someone to spend 4 years at
university? Could we not consider a straightforward 3 year undergraduate
qualification in Archives? And with the increased amount of knowledge
archive students are expected to absorb in a mere 9 months, might the
profession not be better served by a longer period of training/study. I
know some of the courses are now offering students a choice between
different aspects of their training, and am worried that this could mean
newly qualified archivists end up pigeon-holed into certain types of jobs
before their careers have even begun, simply because of choices they made
whilst training.
