debate throughout each session. Proposals should be analytical, not
descriptive, and should reflect the changing nature of archives, records
and the user.

presentations, will be considered. Synopses of 500 words for each
presentation, which should aim to last for a maximum of 20 minutes
should be submitted to [log in to unmask] by Friday 13 April
2007. Please include a brief cv (1 page) of the speakers Further
information about the conference is available at the conference web
site: www.dundee.ac.uk/archives/SUV2007
Theme 1: The nature of archives in the university and scientific
sectors and the challenges affecting them
This session will focus on the nature of university / scientific
archives. What is a university or scientific archive, what are the main
influences on it and why is it changing?
Theme 2: Users: who are they, what do they want and how do we know?
The format and topic of this session is intended to promote debate
amongst delegates about the nature of our users (both within and
external to our organisations, including the media), the services we
should provide, how we evaluate this and how we balance the demands of
different groups and stakeholders.
Theme 3: The archival workforce: education, training and recruitment
This session will examine the nature of the archival workforce. Short
papers are welcome on topics such as professional skills required,
education (including distance learning), training, recruitment,
paraprofessionals and volunteers, and the issues posed by short term
projects and limited funding. A broad international perspective is
sought.
Theme 4: Theory v practice: The impact of the changing nature of
archives and users, and new technologies on theory and practice
This session will consider perspectives on evolving archival theory and
practice and the influence of new technologies and diverse user groups.
It will examine the issues surrounding keeping archives and records; how
this has changed in recent times and the impact on collecting policies,
appraisal, processing, outreach and funding.
