I see the rowers every day down the river. Lately, the 8s have taken
to wearing springs of green on their shoulders, the cox a hat of green
sprigs. I've never seen this before and I lived in a boating town -
each of the villages and towns along the Taw and the Torridge had at
least two boating clubs. None of them had degrees, though, so maybe we
do things differently there.
Sculling, as I know it, is a single oarsmen with a single oar from
the rear-end of the boat - very fast and better than the much-vaunted
8s.
