Dear Martin
Thank you for your efforts in attempting to throw some light on the recent
incident.
I have several questions in relation to the map you have published
1. You state that the map has been derived from BA Charts 2884 and 3832.
What is the geodetic datum referred to on these charts?
2. If the low-water line on the charts has been derived from 2002 satellite
imagery and can be assumed not to have moved appreciably in 5 years, then
there could be a problem with the coordinates (assumed to be WGS84) used to
plot the boarding position, as this position plots inshore of the drying
line. However, without knowing the draft of the vessel boarded, the tidal
range in the region or the state of the tide at the time of boarding, it is
quite possible that the plotted position is correct.
3. What are the published coordinates of the Iranian straight baseline
terminal point and the geodetic datum to which these coordinates are
referred? Where do these coordinates plot on BA Charts 2884 and 3832, after
allowing for any datum difference?
Regards
Brian Murphy

Subject: [INT-BOUNDARIES] Iran-Iraq
Dear colleagues,
In light of the ongoing arguments over whether the British naval
personnel detained by the Iranian government last week were in Iraqi or
Iranian waters, I have posted a map and some notes which reflect my
understanding of the boundary situation in the area at
http://www.dur.ac.uk/ibru/resources/iran-iraq/. I welcome your comments,
especially if you feel the notes contain any errors of fact.
Regards,
m a r t i n
