A while back, a posting here drew attention to the excellent David
Picard / Mike Robinson collection of essays on Festivals, Tourism and
Social Change. There’s an interesting snippet in the latest hidden europe
e-news (more a popular publication rather than an academic one) that
nicely picks up on the notions of festival as performance and festivals as
a way in which a community negotiates its own identity. See the second
item (Shrovetide Frolics) on this link:

The magazine is a world apart from many popular publications in the travel
and tourism area, with well researched pieces that probe issues of
language, culture and identity. The table of contents of the latest issue
is at http://www.hiddeneurope.co.uk/articles.php?tPath=19
