Sessions will feature:
The national scene.
Part-time students: the forgotten hundreds and thousands.
Claire Callender, Professor at London South Bank University and author
of Universities UK report on part-time undergraduate students will
speak about their experiences of and attitudes towards part-time study
and its costs.
Motivations to study: can we 'typologise' students?
Leon Feinstein, Director of the Centre for the Wider Benefits of
Learning, Institute of Education, will speak about the findings of the
Birkbeck/OU graduate study, exploring how far it is possible to
distinguish different 'types' of students in terms of their reasons
for studying.
Birkbeck and Open University graduates: who are they?
Alan Woodley, Senior Researcher, Open University, will give an
overview of the background characteristics and outcomes of study,
highlighting similarities and differences between Birkbeck and Open
University graduates.
Study outcomes three years later: more or less?
Anne Jamieson, Senior Lecturer and project director of the Birkbeck
study, will report on the three year follow-up survey of the Birkbeck
graduates, exploring the impact of time passing on the levels and
range of benefits of study.
Study pathways in adulthood over a decade
Lesley Adshead, Research Fellow at Birkbeck will present findings of a
longitudinal study of Continuing Education students, mapping their
study pathways over a period of eleven years.
