Dear John,
Kipling may well have read "The Embassy of Sir Thomas Roe to the Court
of the Great Mogul, 1615-1619". (Or perhaps Uncle Crom liked to quote
this piece?) This was published in 1899, for the Hakluyt Society. On
page 540 is a reference to "Terry, p.82" and the quotation:
"Its chief Inhabitants at this day are ziim and ohim, birds and wild
beasts; but the stately Ruins thereof give a shadow of its Beauty
while it flourished in its Pride".
Terry would be Edward Terry, who (in 1777) wrote "A Voyage to East-India"...
wherein some things are taken notice of, in our passage thither, but
many more in our abode there, within that rich and most spacious
Empire of the Great Mogul ; mixt with some parallel observations and
inferences upon the story, to profit as well.
Best regards,
John
