Hi Claire -
we have a whole 10-15 mins to cover RM and Information Rights at Induction - it is tricky!
Key points I always make:
- what the responsibility of individual members of staff is in relation to the RM policy
- records created in the course of employment belong to the institution (often very difficult for
employees to grasp).
- be careful when commiting thoughts to email, paper etc. and be aware that potentially others may
have the right to see whats written about them.
- then I do an overview of things that may help them in their work e.g. guidance on working out of
the office, retention schedule and things for them to think about in relation to RM such as sharing
information within teams to ensure that when colleagues are off sick/on leave info. can be shared.
- we're currrently also thinking about incorporating guidance on where to save electronic
information (we don't have EDRM in place yet)
While it is a short slot we have found it useful in raising awareness of what we do and how we can
assist in the future and occasionally do get contacted by people later down the line asking us to go
and do specific work with their teams etc.

Just a quick one....
Our team has had a twenty minute slot on the Corporate Induction Day for
some time and content includes the usual suspects - FOI/DP/EIR, Copyright,
etc. It has recently been suggested that Records Management should be
incorporated into this and the time slot is a whole five minutes!
Was wondering what thoughts people have on the message we should be trying
to give out seeing as the audience is essentially newbies.
I'm not entirely convinced that we can cover what we need to within such a
short time.
AS always thoughts/suggestions welcome!
Best regards
